Federal Court Litigation
The litigation team at MP&M appears frequently before Maine's federal trial courts, both prosecuting and defending cases brought under a variety of federal statutes or on the basis of diversity of citizenship. Each of the partners leading the firm's federal court litigation team is a former federal law clerk, one on the district court level and the other with the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Each has a decade or more of experience in Maine's federal bar and has appeared as a presenter in legal education programs focusing on federal practice. Through our experience, MP&M's federal litigation team has become acutely familiar with the many procedural requirements imposed by the local rules of the District Court for the District of Maine and by the customary practices of the judges and magistrate judges of our federal court.
The District of Maine is noted for having the second fastest civil docket in the entire federal system. Our clients find that the District's short deadlines and fast-paced trial practice usually result in more rapid and less costly resolution of their disputes. Practice before Maine's federal courts, therefore, requires extremely efficient discovery, effective case preparation and motion practice, and a thorough knowledge of local practices. The MP&M federal litigation team embodies all of these qualities and is well-suited to assist our clients with any case, large or small, that must or should be litigated in Maine's federal courts.
